When does it start?

When does it actually start? Is it born with uttering those three little words or does it exist long before? Commitment sits between casual and serious, like a shared bookmark, dividing a relationship into the before and the after chapters, ‘me’ and ‘we’. Does it start when you first meet, and without hesitation, know this person is your tomorrows? Is it after the third date? The first kiss? Is it only alive if you verbalize it, say it out loud to one another? Is it when you first tell a complete stranger about them while waiting in line? After you get naked and put your faith in a locked bedroom door? Is commitment realized with a ring? A ceremony? Matching tattoos? Canceling memberships on dating websites? Is it when you delete photos of exes off your phone? Has commitment begun when you no longer add emoji hearts or xo to every person you talk to, now only reserved for that one? Is it when you effortlessly hold hands in public? Change your relationship status online or post the first picture of you both? When does commitment actually begin? Is it when the thought of permanence is no longer seen as a surrendering of freedom? Is it when you no longer need to question it, you just know? Defining the exact moment commitment starts is nearly impossible, that is until it ends.
