Oscar-worthy Movies

This is the time of year that Hollywood starts putting out its best movies so they'll qualify for this year's Oscars. So far I've seen four flicks that fit the category.

Green Book is a totally novel twist on the buddy movie genre that knocks it out of the park! Both Mahershala Ali and Vigo Mortensen deliver virtuoso performances as a black classical pianist and his hired Italian mob-connected bouncer/driver on a concert road tour of the Jim Crow South. I saw it this evening. It's a great flick. Drop everything and go see it.

Widows is beginning-to-end surprise. Directed by Steve McQueen (who doesn't look anything like his namesake), it's the heist movie to end all heist movies. On top of that, it's a chick-empowerment guy flick. McQueen is a directorial master. If you ever saw The Sting you'll want to see this movie. It's in that league but with violence, death and explosions. Subtle it is not. If you don't see this you're gonna hate yourself come Oscar time.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a fairly pedestrian bio-pic with unforgettable musical performances. If you missed or just miss Freddy Mercury and Queen you can catch up with history in just over two hours of pure nostalgia and instant connection.

A Star Is Born is a re-re-re- remake of girl becomes a pop darling. With Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga teaming up to do everything but sweep up at night, this flick radiates genius. The girl can act and the guy can sing... and they can both write and he can direct. Who knew? Run, don't walk, to wherever you can find it before you're reduced to *shudder* watching it alone in bed on a tiny screen.

Crazy Rich Asians is a bit of niche comedy that's moving to DVD, which is probably where it belongs. I was most struck by how much Singapore has changed since I was last there, but the film does have some good moments and will make you chuckle. Don't expect any belly laughs. I saw it because my Asian niece in Hawaii liked it, and I wanted to share the experience with her. If I had to choose between this and the others above, I'd skip this.

The rest of the still-in-theaters flicks on my must-see list are:

A Private War... about a female journalist who lost an eye covering combat holds a special interest for me because a woman I know went into Afghanistan with the first wave of US troops after 9/11. She and I had a particularly revealing conversation at the Thanksgiving dinner table about the very unique role journalists are playing in covering the murder of Washington Post journalist/commentator Jamal Khashoggi at the instigation of the Saudi Crown Prince. Did anybody remember, by the way, that Thanksgiving, November 22, was the 55th anniversary of the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy? We did, with a heartfelt toast to Camelot and his memory, though many of those at the gathering weren't alive when he was taken from us.

The Coen Brothers' Ballad of Buster Scruggs looks like it will be a real surprise. It's an anthology of five westerns with a much-heralded ensemble cast. I try not to miss Coen Brothers films.

The Girl in the Spider's Web is a sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I enjoyed the books and the first movie. I hear the title character is very good. This one has a different director so I don't know what to expect. If anybody's seen it, or any of the others in this section, I'd like to know what you thought.

I'd like to see The Front Runner because government and politics are among my professional specialties. It's about Gary Hart, which makes it a bit quaint for these times.

I just watched the sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I couldn't follow it. I really loved the first one. But I found the second one to be a disappointment. I've been watching Barry on HBO, its a comedy about a hitman that is trying to become an actor. I think its pee your pants funny. Also, I thought "A Star Is Born" was a fantastic movie and soundtrack.
Hope life is treating You well my friend.

That's sad about the Dragon Tattoo sequel. I heard it was a bit disjointed, but had hoped it would overcome that defect. I never did see it, M, but I greatly appreciate your assessment. I don't feel so bad now about missing it. Couldn't agree more about A Star is Born. I felt the same way about Bohemian Rhapsody. Life is not treating me at all, M. I'm paying for everything. (Just kidding. I may be paying, but I'm having a hell of a time.) I hope life is giving you a great ride. You've certainly earned it.

i haven't see a lot of movies at the theaters lately. However we did see "A Star is born" and loved it, theater was full... Also seen "Crazy Rich Asians" on DVD, liked it too. Wife and daughter were belly laughing a lot... I'm also a Coen brothers fan, haven't seen this one yet.

Politics... Just waiting on the mud slinging to start against E Warren. If I was king for a day Donald would be out and she'd be in.

I wasn't able to see The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. It was only screened in one theater that was hard to get to, and slipped away shortly after I put up this post.

THE HAPPY PRINCE sounds very interesting. 1960's THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE is a film you might want to catch with Peter Finch in the title role. It is an opulent film directed by Ken Hughes with the Production Design by Ken Adam that is very rich and detailed capturing the feel of the period.

Oscar Wilde! You lucky girl. I knew I had missed something. I remember seeing the ads for that flick, but something got in the way and I forgot to go see it.

This season seems to have a particularly rich selection. I hope you can get out and see some of these films... including some that are upcoming. If you like period pieces, The Favorite, which is just out now, looks promising. "Social commentary, sexual antics and schemes run amok in a comedy of palace intrigue" in Queen Anne's court, according to one review. "Contains strong sexual elements, nudity and coarse language" Sound familiar?

And there are some films that are just terrible. I thought Fifty Shades of Grey was one of the worst films ever made. It was lacking in all departments.

Check out John Frankenheimer's THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. Pt's a great film and has an almost documentary feel to it. It was made during the JFK era and you can feel it through the film's dialogue and images.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO is a film I can watch over and over again. The film's story line and the characters' performances from the solid cast are so interesting as David Finchers direction slowly brings all the different elements together.

I want to see that after it comes out December 21. It has the potential to turn concepts of gender and gender expression upside down. Carell has been challenging himself with the roles he's chosen. I hope he's up to this one.

Welcome to Marwen is based on a documentary called Marwencol. Maybe we should ask feelmeglow if she's seen it.

Let me know what you think of Welcome to Marwen if you see it.

Good movies, in my opinion, are those that I feel like watching again from time to time.

But I don't watch movies to enlighten myself or become aware of social or political issues, for instance. What I want is entertainement, so it's mostly sci-fi or adventures.

    Some of the main ones:
    - The 1st "Star Wars" (1977)
    - "Back to the future" trilogy
    - "Matrix" trilogy
    - "The wall" (Pink Floyd)
    - "Tommy" (The Who)
    - "Mara und der Feuerbringer"
    - "Ghost Busters"
    - "Alien 2"
    -"Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy"

    And so on.
Everybody has their own favorites. I'm all for that. I was too much of a bear of little brain to get the Matrix the first time I saw it. I can never sit through an entire Matrix repeat. Star Wars or Back to the Future are more my speed. I can happily sit through repeats of Casablanca, The Sting, Butch Cassidy, Unforgiven and especially Pulp Fiction.

Thanks for adding a new category to the discussion.

Thanks for your thoughts and kind words about my writing .

JFK was much on my mind on Thanksgiving and also that day in 1963 . I had spent the previous month or more in Tokyo planning the visit of half of Kennedy's cabinet for the first-ever joint economic summit with the Japanese. I sat on my bed that morning holding my head in my hands in shocked disbelief as I listened to the news over Armed Forces Radio that Kennedy had been shot and the plane bringing the Secretaries of State and Treasury and their entourage was turning around halfway over the Pacific and returning to Washington. I spent the rest of the week dismantling the economic meeting and taking my turn greeting hundreds of grieving Japanese who came to the embassy to sign the condolence book. I've seen this country survive a lot of tragedy since then, though not usually the kind brought on by sheer stupidity.

I'm not much for documentary, primarily for lack of convenient access. Most of the good documentary flicks are shown on short notice and by the time I find out about them they're gone. I do think they count.

How about you? Are you a movie junkie like me? What's your favorite genre? What's the best thing you've seen lately... and why did you like it? What disappointed you... and why? Don't be shy. Unlike politics, the movies are one of the safest topics on the internet.
