Bob dole today I think it was amazing that bob dole wanted to stand and salute our fallen president. Wonder how many young people would do that? I think it shows no matter what our politics are.. in the end we are americans and need to show a sign of respect. |

That "Greatest Generation" of Americans still has a great deal to teach all of us. I had the good fortune to learn from some of the greatest of them, the veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (look it up... you'll be amazed). I was in the Capitol rotunda too today Saying Thanks. There was a huge number of young people, four hispanic girls with a small child right in front of me in the line, a fellow too young to have experienced Bush's presidency, to whom I spoke at length. We were all moved, despite our age differences, by a profound respect for the noblest American of us all.

This generation is vanishing. My dad serviced on the us Samson in ww2.. he is now dead..buried in full honors and all is forgotten. His service is remember by a single flag on his grave. The next generation will not care and will forget

I think you do try to be fair, Leo, and I applaud your desire to honor a war hero and fallen president. At the same time, it's important to recognize that a lot of Americans fall into the trap of thinking politicians can work miracles. I admired Bush because I studied him. I know why he raised taxes after promising not to even though he was pretty sure that it would mean defeat in the next election. He knew the Reagan debt would kill the economy. It was an open secret. The US enjoyed 15 years of prosperity because he made that sacrifice. Most politicians would have taken the coward's way out and refused to back out of an unwise campaign pledge which he knew was written in water, even though the Republican right wing thought tax pledges were carved in stone. John F. Kennedy wrote a book entitled Profiles in Courage. It helped build his reputation as an idealist. Most of the politicians he profiled were voted out of office by the very public that expected miracles instead of courage. Bush actually exhibited courage, and his sacrifice produced what amounted to an economic miracle... proving that no good deed goes unpunished. Sometimes the public gets the government it deserves, and sometimes we get lucky and get people like Bush and Dole and your dad's generation.

Quoting Dreamcatcher: "The US enjoyed 15 years of prosperity because he made that sacrifice." And Clinton got all the credit for it.

Quoting Gen. George Catlett Marshall: "You can accomplish anything you want in Washington as long as you let somebody else get the credit for it." Everybody cares too much about getting credit and not enough about getting the job done. Lyndon Johnson knew that. That's why he was such an effective Senate Leader. As President, he made sure that Minority Leader Everett Dirksen knew he was going to get plenty of credit for supporting the Voting Rights Act. He got things done.
