Celebrate Bisexuality Day
♥ ♥ * CELEBRATE BISEXUALITY DAY ~ ♥ Celebrate Bisexuality Day is observed on 23 September by Members of the Bisexual Community and their supporters. ♥ This day is a call for the Bisexual Community, their friends and supporters to recognize and celebrate Bisexuality, Bisexual history, Bisexual Community and Culture and all the Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ and otherwise non-Monosexual people in their lives. ♥ First observed in 1999, Celebrate Bisexuality Day is the brainchild of three United States Bisexual Rights activists — Wendy Curry of Maine, Michael Page of Florida and Gigi Wilbur of Texas. Wilbur said: ♥ “Ever since the Stonewall rebellion, the Gay and Lesbian Community has grown in strength and visibility. The Bisexual Community also has grown in strength, but in many ways we are still invisible. I too have been conditioned by society to automatically label a couple walking hand-in-hand as either Gᴀʏ, Lᴇsʙɪᴀɴ or Hᴇᴛᴇʀᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ — depending upon the perceived gender of each person". ♥ This celebration of Bisexuality in particular, as opposed to general LGBT events, was conceived as a response to the prejudice and marginalization of the Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ persons by some in both the Straight and greater LGBT Communities. ♥ In its first year, an observance was held during the International Lesbian and Gay Association, which occurred during the week of the 23rd; while at first it only took hold in areas with an extremely strong Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ presence, it is now celebrated worldwide. ♥ It features events such as discussions, dinner parties and dances in Toronto and a large masquerade ball in Queensland, Australia. At Texas A&M University, the week featured discussion panels and question-and-answer sessions. ♥ * BISEXUAL COMMUNITY ~ ♥ Bisexual Community (also known as, the Bi/Pan, Bisexual/Pansexual Community, Bi/Pan/GenderQueer Community and Queer-identified Community) includes Members of the LGBT Community who identify as Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ, Pᴀɴsᴇxᴜᴀʟ and/or "fluid", as well as their allies. ♥ A common concern among people involved with the Bisexual Community is discrimination against Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ people — two specific forms are: Biphobia and Bisexual Erasure. ♥ People who identify as Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ as well some who are Gᴇɴᴅᴇʀǫᴜᴇᴇʀ or Pᴀɴsᴇxᴜᴀʟ are in the peculiar situation of receiving specifically directed hatred, distrust, stereotyping or denial called Biphobia and Bisexual Erasure from both the Gᴀʏ and Hᴇᴛᴇʀᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ populations. ♥ There are some elements of general anti-LGBT feelings along with misunderstandings against Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs; however, the unique discrimination faced by Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs include those who say Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs, Gᴇɴᴅᴇʀǫᴜᴇᴇʀs and Pᴀɴsᴇxᴜᴀʟs are unsure of their true feelings, that they are experimenting or going through a "phase" and that they eventually will or should "decide" or "discover" which sex they are attracted to. ♥ While other non-Hᴇᴛᴇʀᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ orientations may face similar situations these instances are more commonly directed to the Bisexual Community. ♥ However, there is also increasing support, inclusion and visibility in both Communities, especially in the LGBT Community. ♥ * DEFINING THE COMMUNITY ~ ♥ The social networks of some Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs, sometimes called Gᴀʏ- or Lᴇsʙɪᴀɴ-identified Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs, are heavily concentrated inside the LGBT Communities. ♥ But others, sometimes called Hᴇᴛᴇʀᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ-identified Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs, may rarely participate in LGBT Culture. ♥ And still others choose to maintain their primary social contacts mainly with other Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ-, Pᴀɴsᴇxᴜᴀʟ- and Qᴜᴇᴇʀ-identified people. ♥ There has been talk of and more of a movement to have a separate Bisexual Community. ♥ A series of Communities and Groups have been working together and focusing on issues that are important to the Bisexual Community such as Biphobia, dating, coming out, Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs in the news and entertainment and Bisexual Erasure, among several other issues. These are Qᴜᴇᴇʀ-identified and closely allied with the Gᴀʏ, Lᴇsʙɪᴀɴ and Tʀᴀɴsɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ Communities, but their main focus is the Bisexual Community. ♥ There has also been a movement to combat Biphobia and myths about Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟs. ♥ The Bisexual Community tend to have many of their own events and conferences, publications, Websites and organizations, magazines, writer's groups, media, leaders and politicians, and even mental health associations. ♥ These Communities come together with the Gᴀʏ, Lᴇsʙɪᴀɴ and Tʀᴀɴsɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ Communities for bigger LGBT events such as LGBT Pride parades, civil rights marches and advocacy, conferences and other Nationwide causes where the interests of the Communities intersect, such as the National Equality March. ♥ There are Bisexual Groups in several cities. ♥ Many conferences now have separate seminars on Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ and Tʀᴀɴsɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ topics and several LGBT Pride parades in many cities now include a Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ section of the parade as well. ♥ Hᴇᴛᴇʀᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ and Hᴏᴍᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ people can often be included in the Bisexual Community and are typically termed as allies, "straight-but-not-narrow", Bi-friendly or Bi-inclusive as they often support political rights and social dignity for Bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ, Pᴀɴsᴇxᴜᴀʟ and Gᴇɴᴅᴇʀǫᴜᴇᴇʀ people. Other Communities also tend to be welcoming of wide range of different orientations. ♥ September 23rd is known as, Bisexual Pride Day.
